This was a pretty good Gothic novel I picked it up at the library booksale.I think that most interesting thing about this book was it s setting, both location and time period The story happens in Venice in the year 1797 just as the French Republican army is kicking the Austrian s back across Europe Venice is determined to remain neutral, which is difficult considering that the Austrians would LOVE to have Northern Italy and do, for all intents and purposes as a part their empire. What was most intriguing about this historical set up is that the hero was not only French, but Corsican and the French Republian Army and the ideology of the Revolution were represented positively I cannot say I have ever seen this in another historical romance novel, where everyone is anti Bonaparte and is appalled by the Revolution So this was different, to say the least.

I do love a good Gothic thriller, and this book has a lot of wonderful tropes I like a heroine just escaping the guillotine, the city of Venice, a mysterious housekeeper, a mysterious love interestUnfortunately the heroine is pretty flat, and the book never really took off I doubt I ll come back to reread it, and it s already falling out of my head even though I only finished it earlier today It needed of a spark.
